Rtd. Gen. Sarath Fonseka will be brought before a Court Martial on March 16 and 17. The Court Martial comprises a three member panel, Military spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe said today. He added that the Court Martial will take place at the Navy Headquarters, Colombo 1.
The panel consists of Majors General AL.H. Wijetunge and D.R.A.B. Jayathilake and Rear admiral W.W.J.S. Fernando. The Court Martial will be chaired by Major General H.C.P.S. Weeratunge, he added.
Samarasinghe added that two Courts Martial will be conducted on Fonseka by the same panel, one on March 16 and other on March 17.
The Panel has been appointed by the President upon the advise of the Army Commander, He said.
He added that three charges will be made under the Army act 124 and 102(1). These three charges will for engaging in politics while in active service.
Four charges will be made under the Army act 109(e). These charges are for acting against Sri Lanka Army directives and illicit arms deals.
Samarasighe further said that Fonseka could challenge the Court Martial decision at the Supreme Court. The Charge sheet against Fonseka has been handed over to him today. Thirty five witnesses have come forward against Fonseka which comprise 22 army personnel, 7 policemen and 6 civilians, Samarasinghe said.
